Colston Hall Reopens Following Refurbishment

Under Council management, the Hall was closed for a major scheme of reconstruction in 1935, costing £30,000. It reopened on December 11 the following year with significant modifications to the auditorium and foyer spaces. Weight of the roof was now supported by giant steel girders and all seats had clear view of the stage. Facilitated by a generous donation from the Wills family, the Willis organ was refurbished by its original builder and restored to its former glory. The organ pipes were now hidden behind an ornate grille that was the focus of the auditorium.

Once more, the names of the famous began to appear on the Hall’s playbills. This was particularly so during the war years when the BBC Variety Department moved to Bristol and the stars of the entertainment world were readily available.
