Mail A Musician returns

Last week, Bristol Beacon’s Mail A Musician programme made its return to bring musical joy to the doorsteps of Bristol residents for the first time since Christmas, following the easing of restrictions.

Two music practitioners with Bristol Beacon, Tara Baggott and Sarah Scutt, visited the home of 95 year old Dorothy Brown in Henleaze, where she has lived for over 50 years.

Dorothy’s daughter Ruth nominated her to receive a performance as a treat following the difficult months of lockdown living on her own, saying, “She loves music and interaction with people and having a live concert would give her immense stimulation and a firm acknowledgement that she is here and alive: something which is difficult to realise after days and days of solitude.”

Tara tells us more about the performance:

“We played a selection of jazz tunes from the 1930’s and 40’s, some of which were selected as Dorothy’s favourite by her daughter Ruth. These included Bristol’s own “Stranger on the Shore’ by Acker Bilk and wartime classics such as ‘Chatanooga Choo Choo’ and ‘In The Mood’.

Dorothy said the songs took her right back to when she was young and reminded her of when she first met her husband. She recalled her wedding day after the concert and said that the music reminded her of her very special day.”

Following the concert Dorothy’s daughter Ruth commented: “Having a little concert for her in the driveway was the perfect tonic. Tara and Sarah were also the perfect people to do it. I asked them to play on her 67th wedding anniversary which was very poignant.

And to the performers she added, “Thank you both for a lovely afternoon… You really made my mum’s day.  I’ve never seen her speechless before… She was just blown away!!

She really loved it and loved both of you… I think she was quite tearful with those songs and thinking about her wedding and long train journey from Cornwall to the Gower for their honeymoon. I left her this evening still feeling quite overwhelmed but happy. Thank you!”

Bristol Beacon would like to thank National Lottery Heritage Fund and Paul Hamlyn Foundation for their support in funding the Mail A Musician programme.
