Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy gets behind Colston Hall Transformation

On Wednesday 1st October Bristol East MP and Shadow Foreign Minister, Kerry McCarthy, visited Colston Hall to hear about the concert hall’s recently launched campaign “Thank You for the Music”.

“Thank you for the Music” was launched in September 2014 and aims to raise up to £45m for the essential redevelopment of the iconic concert hall. The regeneration will see it transformed into a “national and regional centre for entertainment, education and enterprise”. The proposed work will form Phase Two of Bristol’s biggest ever redevelopment programme in the arts sector. The first phase of Colston Hall’s transformation involved the construction of the £20m foyer space, which opened in 2009 and also includes a performance area.

Kerry McCarthy said “I really enjoyed my visit to Colston Hall and think that this is a great campaign to raise money for its redevelopment. Not only does this institution host a huge number of music and comedy shows, but it also supports the local community through valuable education programmes.

The tour of the hall was fascinating but it certainly highlighted the necessity for further funding to bring it into alignment with other top European concert halls. I cannot wait to see the building when it is finally finished and have no doubt that it will continue to play an important role in the cultural life of Bristol and the South West.”

Colston Hall CEO, Louise Mitchell, said “It was great to be able to give Kerry a tour of the building and talk through our regeneration plans. I am delighted she is going to get behind our campaign – we need support from all politicians nationally, regionally and locally to make sure our ‘Thank you for the Music’ campaign is a success.”
