Colston Hall calls on 45,000 people for its £45m transformation campaign

Colston Hall is calling on 45,000 thousand people across Bristol, the region and the country to support its £45 million transformation.

Ambassadors representing entertainment, education and enterprise will launch the 45k for £45m campaign today (Friday 2 October) at Colston Hall. The aim of the campaign is to show high levels of support for the Hall’s redevelopment that will finish the ambitious scheme that was started in 2009 with the opening of the new foyer.

The £45 million transformation appeal Thank You for the Music was launched in September 2014. Since then, a third of the money has been raised following commitments from the Government (£5m) and Bristol City Council (£10m).

The campaign will make the case for investment from the Government, private donors and other sources, like the Heritage Lottery Fund, to achieve the target. Showing the wholehearted support of people across Bristol, the region and the country is vital to secure this investment.

Louise Mitchell, Chief Executive of Bristol Music Trust, said:

“We want to illustrate how important Colston Hall’s transformation is for Bristol and the South West. Our plans echo values that we hope the public will share; three simple aims for education, entertainment and enterprise.

“The redevelopment will touch tens of thousands of lives. They could be one of the 300,000 people in our audience each year, or one of the 30,000 children we educate. A transformed Colston Hall will also stimulate arts enterprise in a growing south west economy. By attracting more people to the venue, we estimate that we’ll boost the local economy by £100 million over the first five years.

“45,000 people is ambitious. But we believe in our plans to become one of the best arts and learning facilities in the country and we hope the public will come on board and show their support too. ”

Educator and big name in the music and producing industry Tony Briscoe was one of the first three faces to sign up to the 45k for £45m campaign. Tony – the campaign’s education ambassador – has inspired the next generation of musicians through Colston Hall’s music education programmes for the last 10 years.

“I’m supporting the campaign because a redeveloped Colston Hall would make a world of difference to delivering music education excellence for Bristol and beyond.

“New classrooms and technology labs would provide Bristol Plays Music with an inspiring place to educate all. I’m delighted that the transformed facilities will be accessible for the 1,250 disabled children in Bristol for the first time.

“I share the Hall’s ambition for Bristol to become the UK capital of young people’s music by 2020. I hope others do too and sign-up to 45k for £45m.”
