The band Transatlantic Sessions performing live on-stage in front of a seated audience.

Transatlantic Sessions brings together folk traditions from Ireland, Scotland and the USA – and it’s back live in the UK in 2022!

The back-porch session to beat all others begins on the Celtic Connections stage in Glasgow once again, before touring the UK with its all-star cast of singers, songwriters and instrumentalists. This multinational folk supergroup makes for a truly collaborative, unifying musical experience.

Legendary Irish musician Paul Brady makes a welcome return to the fold in February, having first appeared in one of the show’s early TV versions. At once a masterful interpreter of traditional material and a superb original songsmith, Brady’s work straddles folk and pop.

Alongside Brady is US multi-instrumentalist and singer Dirk Powell, a revered exponent of Appalachian and Cajun traditions. Powell’s latest album, 2020’s When I Wait For You, is almost a mini-Transatlantic Sessions in itself, being part-recorded in Glasgow and featuring guest appearances from several house-band regulars.

Also joining the guestlist of singers this time is multi-Grammy winner and US roots musician Sarah Jarosz, Scottish singer Siobhan Miller, whose ever-expanding repertoire encompasses traditional, contemporary and original songs, and Haitian-American musician Leyla McCalla, who has featured in the Carolina Chocolate Drops and has won major acclaim for her earthy, elegant and soulful music.

Performing new bespoke arrangements of their own and others’ material, in a mix of solo and ensemble sets, the singers are accompanied as ever by a crack team of leading instrumental maestros from both sides of the Pond. Under the seasoned musical direction of Shetland fiddle legend Aly Bain and dobro genius Jerry Douglas, the line-up includes Phil Cunningham, John Doyle, Daniel Kimbro, Michael McGoldrick, Russ Barenberg, John McCusker, Donald Shaw and James Mackintosh.
