Last weekend we became the host venue for the world’s greatest classical music festival: BBC Proms. And what a weekend!
Early on Friday morning the sun shone through the trees in Bristol City Centre as we welcomed this incredible music festival to Bristol with the help of Jump Street Band who led a parade towards Bristol Beacon.
The festival began with excitement on Saturday as our Associate Artists Paraorchestra performed their ambitious new work The Virtuous Circle led by Charles Hazlewood. Playing Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 on the move all across Beacon Hall, Paraorchestra completely redefined what a classical concert can be as the audience immersed themselves in the interactive experience.
On Sunday, the BBC Singers celebrated their centenary as they performed with “ecstatic, rich harmonies” in Lantern Hall. Later we moved into Beacon Hall where our Orchestra In Residence Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra performed Jennifer Higdon’s exuberant Percussion Concerto with soloist Evelyn Glennie followed by Tchaikovsky’s evocative Symphony No. 5.
Finally, on Monday, we welcomed families from across Bristol and beyond to journey to the bottom of the sea with CBeebies musical ocean adventure.
As well as three days of performances, we held two workshops for young musicians, Rivers of Rhythm and BBC Young Composers Workshop, introducing them to wonders of music.
Thank you to everyone who came and immersed themselves in BBC Proms – it was an absolute delight!

One of the most exciting, moving and all around thrilling events I have ever been to (and I’m 61!).
The depth and diversity of the sound and movement was amazing – the performances by all so strong and the combination of the dance, the great playing and sense of the whole was great. This performance is what all the Beacon refurbishment was all about”
