Music & Disability

Championing diversity within the music sector

Our Music & Disability strand champions diversity in the music sector, creating opportunities for underrepresented musicians and fostering inclusive practices.

This includes our collaboration with the National Open Youth Orchestra, a pioneering ensemble where talented disabled and non-disabled musicians (ages 11-25) rehearse and perform together. We also offer a comprehensive training course for musicians and educators, equipping them with skills to support young people facing barriers to music education.

Together, we’re building a more diverse, equitable future for the music industry.

This is the first orchestra I’ve ever fitted into.

The impact we make

Breaking down barriers within the music industry

We make opportunities for those who face barriers to develop their skills, confidence, and creative potential in an inclusive environment. Through collaborative projects, training, and accessible programmes, we are shaping a more diverse and representative music sector.

Our initiatives empower young people to connect with peers, work with professional musicians, and perform at Bristol Beacon. From rehearsing with the National Open Youth Orchestra to developing inclusive teaching practices, participants gain skills that transform their musical journey.

Through projects such as the National Open Youth Orchestra, Sunday Jam, Beacon Accessible Summer School, and FLOW, we are removing barriers to music-making. These initiatives provide young people and educators with the tools and opportunities to thrive, ensuring that inclusive music-making becomes a fundamental part of the sector.

Key Impact Areas:

  • Increased accessibility: Young musicians facing barriers have access to high-quality training and performance opportunities.
  • Skills development: Participants gain technical and creative skills through inclusive music education and collaboration.
  • Representation and inclusion: The programme helps diversify the music sector by nurturing young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Empowered educators: Music leaders receive specialist training to create more inclusive learning environments.

By investing in accessibility and representation, our work within Music & Disability is creating pathways for the next generation of diverse musicians.
