In November 2020, Bristol Beacon launched a city-wide callout to the people of Bristol to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences of 2020 in words, music and song, with the goal of creating A New Song For Bristol together.

In response, we received a kaleidoscope of creations – from handwritten letters from Bristolians in their 80s to eight year olds sharing their views on missing live music – the people of Bristol have answered the call to share your song.

Now Bristol Beacon and Sound UK are proud to present the premiere of the song that the resulting submissions have inspired.

Written by ex-Bristol resident This is The Kit and Bristol band Bucky, the song, entitled ‘Trousers Optional’, has been recorded by Bristol collective The Fantasy Orchestra, joined by some of the Bristol residents who inspired the new song with their words and music.

Join us here at 12:30pm on Tuesday 23 March, the one-year anniversary of the first national lockdown, to share in this uplifting celebration of Bristol’s creativity, resilience and humour in the face of adversity.

We’ve been wowed by all the amazing poems, songs and touching letters we’ve received for this project. Take a look at some of the submissions here.

Find out more about how A New Song for Bristol was inspired by the history of Bristol Beacon during World War Two here.

And if you feel inspired to take part – you still can! The project is continuing to work with community groups and schools across Bristol to create even more songs and in the summer of 2021 we hope to celebrate all the amazing submissions at Bristol Beacon, so if you want to get creative and share your own Song for Bristol, you can find out more and submit here.
