Bristol Choral Society perform Vaughan Williams’ ‘Five Mystical Songs’; a choral work that’s familiar to many. The Society’s other nod to the prolific composer is perhaps less well-known. ‘An Oxford Elegy’ is an atmospheric meditation, located tantalisingly just beyond the ‘dreaming spires’. To narrate the performance the Choral Society welcome actor, stalwart of BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Archers’, and Bristol Choral Society choir member, John Telfer.
Keeping Vaughan Williams company is his friend Gerald Finzi whose delectable ‘Romance for String Orchestra’ raises the curtain with a nostalgic idyll-in-miniature evoking a bucolic Eden.
