Britten and his Friends

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Conductor Kirill Karabits
Cellist Johannes Moser

Shostakovich Festive Overture
Britten Cello Symphony
Shostakovich Five Interludes from Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District
Britten Passacaglia and Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes

Marking – to the day – the centenary of his birth, the BSO is backing Britten with an Anglo-Russian programme rich in friendship, triumph and Stalinesque scandal. Bridging the two composers is cellist Rostropovich for whom Britten, (exactly half a century ago), wrote the probing Cello Symphony; while drenched in the Suffolk seascape the excerpts from Peter Grimes acknowledge Britten’s operatic coming-of-age. (His friend Shostakovich’s ‘Lady Macbeth’ on the other hand famously earned the disapproval of Stalin – not a helpful career move!). Stepping into Rostropovich’s shoes is Tchaikovsky Prize-Winner Johannes Moser, hailed by Gramophone as ‘one of the finest among the astounding gallery of young cellists’.
