Building a sustainable concert hall

This Discovery Day is all about the environmental sustainability of live music, and we’ve got loads of ways that you can take part and get involved.

From Taiko drumming workshops to a hands-on Tetrahedron challenge to eco brick demonstrations with Bricking-it, there are loads of ways you can learn about how we can all reduce our environmental impact on our world.

All Day 12pm – 6pm

Bricking It – Stall on Ground Floor
Discover what eco-bricks are, how they are made and have a go at making your own in this workshop with Bricking-it.

Willmott Dixon Transformation Area – Level 1 Stall bar
Join our building contractors Willmott Dixon for a host of hands-on activities. Take part in the Tetrahedron challenge, make a bee in their crafting area and dress up as a construction worker with their hard hat photo booth.

Cardboard City with Children’s Scrapstore – Terrace Bar
Build a Cardboard City in creative sessions from Children’s Scrapstore throughout the day.

Instrument Amnesty
We want your unused/unloved instruments, bring them along!

Taiko Drumming Workshop

Ever wanted to play a Taiko drum? Or you have no idea what a Taiko drum is, but want to try all the same? Then come along to this hands on Japanese drumming workshop for adults and bigger kids and give it a try.

The family singalong was a firm favourite at the last Discovery Day, and it’s back! Join our Bristol Plays Music team who will lead a fun and inclusive workshop, teaching well-known songs for an informal performance in Colston Hall’s foyer space.

Story Telling

Located in the event space opposite the Box Office on the ground floor

Sophie Tea & Emmy The Harp Storytelling Workshop
12:30 – 13:15, 15:00 – 15:45

Join Sophie Tea and Emmy the Harp on a magical, musical mission! Listen to their enchanting story followed by an interactive journey. See if you can complete the challenges set and win the title of Greatest Green explorer. This creative workshop will explore how we interact with our environment and think about how we can make small changes to look after our planet.

The Story Cellar Storytelling Workshop
13:45 – 14:30, 16:00 – 16:45

Enter The Story Cellar and delve into our storytelling ingredients to make a brand new tale. Join us as we journey across the seas to save the planet with an army of recycled heroes (made by you, which you get to take home with you when the tale is told.) Plenty of puppetry, props and story making magic with storyteller Liz Felton.


This event takes place across several floors in Colston Hall Foyer which is fully accessible.

We’ll also have a Mobiloo for our customers’ use throughout the day for this event.
