Myths and Majesty

With the Czech Philharmonic and LSO only weeks apart, February is turning out to be quite a month! Lionel Bringuier forges an intriguing Franco-German entente cordiale that smoulders and seduces.

Change to conductor and programme

On the advice of his doctor, conductor Robin Ticciati has regrettably announced that he must withdraw from a number of forthcoming engagements in order to fully recover from a persistent back injury. He is therefore now unavailable to conduct his concerts with the LSO in London and Bristol in February 2018.

We are very grateful to Lionel Bringuier, who will now conduct the Orchestra and soloist Alina Ibragimova for these concerts. There will also be one change to the programme with Dutilleux’s Metaboles replacing Franck’s Psyche Suite.

In Daphnis et Chloé Ravel said he “wanted to compose a large fresco in keeping with the Greece of my dreams”. Dreaming is something his ‘symphonie chorégraphique’ does stupendously well. Is there a more spectacular sunrise in all music, a miracle of shimmering, swelling translucency? Meanwhile Brahms’ feet are firmly on the ground. Or are they? The Adagio of his only violin concerto floats free, before the finale flirts with a pinch of gypsy fervour.

Alina Ibragimova, ‘one of the most expressive violinists around’ (BBC Music Magazine) will be performing with London Symphony Orchestra.
