Symphoniae Sacrae: In Stone and with Stout

Clifton International Festival of Music

Directed by Ben Westerman

Purcell Funeral Music for Queen Mary
Bach Komm, Jesu, Komm
Purcell A Health A Health to ye
Purcell To all lovers of musick

This year’s festival opener features one of Bristol’s most talented young chamber choirs as they take us on a musical journey of the sacred and profane through the works of Henry Purcell and his contemporaries. From the poignant beauty of Purcell’s Funeral Music for Queen Mary and Bach’s Komm, Jesu, Komm to the somewhat earthier catches and madrigals of Purcell and his contemporaries, this concert will contrast the glorious religious music of the period with the light-hearted entertainments of the very same composers.

Be sure to leave some time for a post concert drink but don’t forget the house keys – as the legend tells us, it proved to be Mr Purcell’s undoing!
