The Organ Scholarship programme realises our commitment to celebrating the heritage of The Britton Organ, and ensures that it remains a living part of the city’s musical future.
Designed for young people in Bristol with a passion for music, the scholarships offer free, high-quality organ tuition to students who may not otherwise have access to this unique instrument.
As the Britton Organ returns to life following its major restoration, these scholarships invest directly in the next generation of organists, nurturing new talent whilst maintaining a rare musical tradition. Three young musicians have been selected for the inaugural year in 2025 – 2026, each receiving specialist tuition across the academic year from an experienced professional organist.
The scholars were chosen for their musical curiosity, commitment and potential, following an open application process. Through one-to-one lessons, workshops and performance opportunities, the programme supports their musical development while strengthening the future of organ music in Bristol.
Meet the scholars
Joshua Le Poidevin
Joshua is a 15-year-old music student who already performs hymns at his local church. The scholarship gives him regular access to an organ and builds his confidence for future performances.
Jenna Ko
Jenna is 12 and attends Orchard School Bristol. She is keen to develop her musical skills and sees the scholarship as a wonderful opportunity to continue learning the instrument with financial constraints.
Christopher Nicks
Christopher is 15 and studies at St Bede’s Catholic College. He is excited to expand his technique, repertoire and overall experience when playing the organ.
We’re proud to support the restoration of the Britton Organ and Bristol Beacon’s inspiring work to connect this incredible instrument with new generations.
This project doesn’t just preserve a unique piece of musical heritage – it brings it to life in classrooms, rehearsal spaces and communities across the city. Investing in young talent through scholarships and education ensures the legacy of the organ will continue to resonate for years to come.”

About the project
The Organ Scholarships form part of Bristol Beacon’s wider In the Pipes organ heritage project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and supported by the Jack and Monica Britton Trust. Each scholar receives 17 one-to-one lessons across the year with acclaimed organist and educator Andrew Kirk, held at St Augustine’s Chapel within the St Monica Trust.
In addition to individual tuition, scholars take part in group workshops led by Bristol Beacon teacher and organist Claire Alsop, hosted across several city venues, including the Britton Organ itself. Together, the programme combines heritage, education and access, creating a lasting legacy for Bristol’s musical life.
