A person looking to th left corner talking expressively. There are colourful graphic illustrations of instruments and portrayals of sound surrounding them.

A hands-on workshop exploring how to move beyond vague musical advice and develop real, learnable tools for expressive playing.

You’ll look at technique, listening, and imagination in a practical way so music feels more intentional, alive, and communicative across any instrument or voice.

About the workshop

In this hands-on session, you’ll replace that guesswork with a toolkit of tangible, learnable skills. You’ll explore how to practise so technique serves the music, rather than treating the correct notes as the final goal. We’ll also discover psychological strategies to vividly bring your pieces to life.

What the workshop includes:

  • The biomechanics behind nuanced, expressive music-making
  • How internal physical awareness can build musical drama and tension
  •  Practising and cultivating a rich, layered musical imagination
  • How changing the way you listen directly shapes the music
  • The shift from ‘wooden’ playing towards organic flow

Who it’s for?

  • This workshop is suitable for all levels, from beginner to advanced, and all instrumentalists and singers are welcome.
  • There’ll be optional, masterclass-style opportunities to play, where you’ll work on putting the session’s ideas into practice – but there’s absolutely no pressure to do so. You’re equally invited to simply sit back, observe, and absorb – giving you a clear set of strategies for your future playing. If you’d like the chance to play, there will be a piano for pianists; otherwise please bring your own instrument (or voice!).
