Bristol Youth Orchestra Winter Concert

Victoria Rooms

Book Tickets

£3.50 - £6.50 inc. booking fee

A large orchestra fills the stage. They are dressed in black and a conductor leads them from the front.

Join the Bristol Youth Orchestra for a vibrant evening celebrating women’s creativity across the centuries. The programme opens with the surging energy of Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans and the irresistible rhythms of Alice Gomez and Marilyn Rife’s Mambo, performed by the Senior Percussion Ensemble.

František Kramář’s bright and virtuosic Concerto for Two Clarinets follows and the exciting premiere of Sophie Winfield’s The Viaduct of Èze, a striking new work inspired by architecture and a legendary tale. After the interval, Liz Purnell’s Fanfare sets the stage for the UK premiere of Elfrida Andrée’s Symphony No. 2, a Romantic masterpiece by one of Sweden’s pioneering female composers.

Pre-concert panel talk

Before the concert, join us for a lively and insightful discussion featuring the leader of the Bristol Youth Orchestra, composer Sophie Winfield, and a University of Bristol academic Tess Tyler. Together, they will explore how works by female composers can be programmed thoughtfully, and how to place their music within broader artistic and musical traditions.

The panel will also share behind the scenes perspectives on performing with the Bristol Youth Orchestra and on Winfield’s new commission, The Viaduct of Èze, while reflecting on the influences shaping today’s generation of female composers.

This free event for ticket holders offers an inspiring prelude to an evening of remarkable music.
