‘Free Reed’ is a new interactive sound & visual sculpture work, created by moving image artist Savinder Bual in collaboration with Bristol communities & commissioned by Bristol Beacon.

Inspired by the suffragette movement and Bristol Beacon’s cultural heritage, the female creative team will be creating a large mobile sculptural work to house multiple instruments to be blown into, replicating the timbre of voice. Following exhibitions at Whitstable Biennale 2022 and ICA amongst others, this will be Savinder Bual’s largest and most ambitious sculpture to date, both in scale and number of people who will interact with it at once.

Savinder is known to Bristol Beacon audience from her successful Pineapple Orchestra Project in 2018, a commission which used instruments made from pineapples to ask difficult questions around colonialism and contested histories.

We’re inviting you to come and be a part of this sculpture. In this workshop you will explore the importance of freedom of expression and deep listening, as you make free-reeds to create the performances for the sculpture and add your ‘voice’ to our transformed venue spaces.
