Sound System Exhibition

What is sound system culture? When did it start, and why? And are sound systems still relevant today?

Ujima Radio CIC and St. Paul’s Carnival present an exhibition celebrating sound system culture.

Sound systems were first started in Jamaica and provided information through entertainment. This was a way for people to socialise with music from big sound equipment. The generation of Jamaicans who arrived brought this culture to the UK and sound systems continue to be relevant today.

This exhibition highlights the history of the culture with testimonies from three of Bristols sounds Qualitex, Lord Lokko and City Rockers telling their story. Over the years sound systems have played a significant role in carnival celebrations and St. Paul’s Carnival started a Sound System Federation in 2021. This exhibition aims to shine a light on the culture and it’s significance.
