Every Child a Musician: Five Years of Earthsong

School children perform in an orchestra on stage in a large auditorium

For thousands of children across Bristol, Earthsong is their first opportunity to hold an instrument, perform on a stage and discover that music belongs to them too.

Created by Bristol Beacon in partnership with the Earthsong Foundation, the Earthsong Programme provides sustained music education in primary schools where access to specialist provision may otherwise be limited. Through a five-year journey of singing, instrumental learning, ensemble playing and performance, Earthsong does more than teach musical skills. It nurtures confidence, belonging, creativity and aspiration, helping children discover new possibilities for who they can become.

Personal stories: Finding confidence, connection and joy through music

At the annual Earthsong showcase, which takes please in Beacon Hall at Bristol Beacon every summer, we asked the children invovled in the programme what music means to them. Their answers reached far beyond learning notes or mastering technique.

For Dusty, Earthsong offered something deeply personal: a sense of belonging.

“I felt like I was meant to be here,” she reflected, remembering her early experiences in the programme. “I was playing with people who were completely different to me… and I became friends with them through this.”

Music has become a space where she can understand herself and others. More recently, she described how listening to and making music has helped her manage feelings of anxiety and regulate difficult emotions. Looking ahead, her dream is to help others find the same comfort and safety through music that she has found herself.

Meet Dusty

Meet Arlo

For Arlo, Earthsong has opened doors to experiences that once felt unimaginable. Performing in Bristol Beacon’s concert hall transformed his understanding of what he could achieve.

“I usually don’t get to do stuff like solos,” he said. “Today I finally got to do one.”

He described the mixture of nerves and excitement that came with stepping into the spotlight alone. The experience taught him something powerful: mistakes are not the end of the story.

“If you mess up, you might think your chance is gone. But you can always just redo it.”

Those moments of bravery have helped shape new ambitions. While many children dream of sporting success, Arlo’s hopes lie firmly in music. He wants to become a singer, a conductor and eventually a music teacher, passing his knowledge and enthusiasm on to future generations.

Cameron still remembers the excitement of receiving his instrument for the first time.

“It was a very big moment,” he recalled. “A moment that would change my school life.”

What began as curiosity has developed into a broader understanding of music’s role in wellbeing and cultural connection. He imagines one day creating a band that brings together instruments from around the world, celebrating different traditions and sounds.

Again and again, children describe music not simply as an extracurricular activity but as an essential part of being human.

Their words reveal what Earthsong makes possible: not only musical development, but opportunities to build friendships, discover confidence, express emotions and imagine futures that might otherwise have remained out of reach.

Meet Cameron

I feel like music is more than learning instrument or singing a song… it’s just a really good way to find who you are.”

How Earthsong works: Investing in long-term musical journeys

Earthsong is distinctive because it is designed as a sustained programme rather than a one-off intervention.

Working with primary schools where music provision may be limited, particularly in disadvantaged communities or where English is an additional language, the programme follows the same children over five years. This continuity allows skills, confidence and relationships to develop gradually over time.

Children begin with singing games and musicianship activities before progressing into instrumental learning and ensemble playing. Specialist tutors work alongside school staff to deliver whole-class sessions, small-group tuition and after-school opportunities, while instruments are provided free of charge to both schools and pupils.

Performance is woven throughout the journey. For many children, stepping onto the stage at Bristol Beacon offers their first experience of performing in a professional venue.

As Earthsong Course Leader Kristen Cunningham explains: “Days like today are really important because they provide those meaningful, memorable moments. It helps children share their emotions and excitement of being part of a bigger team.”

By removing financial barriers and providing consistent support over several years, Earthsong creates the conditions for children to experience themselves as musicians and to carry that identity with them beyond primary school.

Looking ahead

Thanks to renewed funding, Earthsong has entered a new five-year phase that will expand its reach and deepen its offer from 2025-2030.

Alongside whole-class singing and instrumental learning, the programme now includes composition workshops, enabling children to explore their own creative voices as composers as well as performers. More opportunities for celebration events and performances will allow even more young people to share their achievements with families, peers and wider audiences.

The long-term ambition remains unchanged: that children leave primary school with a lifelong relationship with music, confidence in their own abilities and the belief that creative experiences are for them, regardless of background or circumstance.
