Last week we were delighted to receive the Rocksteady Award for Progressive and Inclusive Music Education in recognition of our HOPE Creative programme, supporting care experienced children, care leavers and young carers to express themselves through creative activity and social interaction.
On 22 February, music and drama education professionals from gathered together for the Music & Drama Education Awards 2024, celebrating the organisations, young people and individuals who have made a significant impact in the lives of young people through arts education.
Bristol Beacon was nominated in two categories for our HOPE Creative programme, as well as our Earthsong programme, supporting music making in primary schools for young people with limited access to music education.
Represented by our Creative Producer, Lu Bristow and our Head of Community, Julia Roderick, as well as other members of the team, including Seah Hotson and former HOPE Creative participant Benji Dorney the award acknowledged the years of work that had gone into developing and growing this programme.
I’m so happy. To think that Hope Creative started years ago as a group and now we are getting national recognition. Thanks for hearing us. It means so much”

What is HOPE Creative?
Bristol Beacon’s HOPE Creative has been supporting care experienced young people aged 7 and older for almost a decade, working with partner organisations such as Bristol City Council to create musical experiences and opportunities for creative expression for young people across the city.
Young people explore singing and creative musical activities in a safe and supportive atmosphere – with the chance to learn, create, play, perform, write and record their very own music.
The programme has youth voice at its very core, and young people are often able to curate and co-devise the content of sessions, suggest project ideas and lead activities.
