Dave O’Higgins and Rob Luft are leading British jazz musicians from two different generations. Whilst O’Higgins has been a cornerstone of the scene since the 1990’s as a prolific bandleader and multi-instrumentalist, Luft rose to prominence more recently after receiving critical acclaim for his 2017 debut, ‘Riser.’ Together, the unlikely duo bring forth a dynamic and ambitious marriage of jazz across the ages – past, present and future.
Their latest endeavour is modern jazz in the African-American tradition, clearly coming from the Monk and Trane lineage, but not bound to emulating it. You will hear Luft easily morphing Wes Montgomery with Bill Frisell, adding his own trademark soundscapes and world influences, while O’Higgins’ emotive melodies evoke Dexter Gordon, Trane, Joe Henderson and Brecker; with a melodic logic of his own.
In addition to these extremely talented co-leaders, the band includes an all-star rhythm section consisting of Ross Stanley (Piano), Misha Mullov-Abbado (Bass) and Rod Youngs (Drums).
