Two of the world’s most sought-after Art Song specialists, tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook, headline this year’s Clifton International Festival of Music with Schubert’s emotionally profound song cycle Winterreise.
Described as the pinnacle of the German Lied tradition, Schubert’s haunting setting of 24 songs charts a wanderer’s journey through harsh and foreboding winter landscapes. Plumbing the depths of lost love, loneliness and existential despair, Schubert, arguably the most literary of all composers, brings Müller’s poetry most vividly to life with his beautifully crafted melodies and emotive harmonic language.
