Building Lasting Opportunities: Renishaw and Bristol Beacon's 12-Year Partnership
- Case Study
For more than a decade, Renishaw and Bristol Beacon have worked together to support opportunities for people across the Bristol region, with a particular focus on young people, community and staff engagement.
Why did Renishaw partner with us?
The partnership began in 2014, when Renishaw was looking to strengthen its company profile as a regional employer and connect with organisations that shared its values. As a specialist business-to-business supplier of advanced engineering technologies, Renishaw recognised the importance of building awareness and relationships within the communities where its employees live and work.
As Bristol Beacon’s network reaches schools, local communities and diverse audiences across the region, the partnership created opportunities for Renishaw to engage meaningfully with local people through a range of initiatives – while simultaneously supporting the organisation’s wider community and social impact goals.
At its heart is a shared belief that creating opportunities takes more than a short-term intervention. It requires long-term commitment, meaningful relationships and an understanding of the communities being served.
Like Renishaw, Bristol Beacon is very focused on engaging with its local communities and giving opportunities to people from across those communities.”

The Renishaw Room
One of the most tangible outcomes of the partnership is the Renishaw Room, located within Bristol Beacon’s education suite.
For Renishaw, the room represents something more than a physical contribution to the venue. It is a visible example of how corporate support can help create the conditions for young people to learn, practise and pursue their musical ambitions.
It is extremely rewarding to see it being used by young musicians from across the city, who now have access to a top-class facility in which to hone their talent.”

From nurturing the next generation of musicians to supporting professional artists and creating opportunities for young people, the studios play a vital role in Bristol Beacon’s work, such as:
1. A space to provide music lessons to children in school
As part of our music education programme, we provide private and group music lessons to 98 students aged between 11-24 over a 12-month period.
I just wanted to say thank you so much for having my son for the Songwriting Sparks course. He absolutely loved it and the piece of music he created was incredible!”

2. A space to deliver our Resident Artists Programme
For the last three years, Bristol Beacon provides paid placements to three mid-career artists. The studios are used as an essential space for artists to rehearse, record and create their albums – ensuring Bristol remains as a city for ground-breaking music, creative exploration and artistic ambition.
Accessing the studio weekly has allowed me valuable time and space to propel my writing and production. I am at a pivotal stage of my career now and I would not be this far into my journey without this!”

3. A space to provide stability, routine and joy to young people in care
For 10 years, Bristol Beacon has been running Hope Creative, an award programme for care-experienced young people.
As part of this programme, 65 young people are welcomed into the studios each year and receive music mentoring sessions, providing routine, community and space to be a child.
4. A space to support the ambitions of young people in the city
This year the Bristol Beacon entered a new partnership with City of Bristol College and now provides a space for the college to deliver its Music Production and Song Craft Course and Festival Production and Sound Engineering course. Together, these courses will provide 50 students between 16–18 years of age with access to a real-life studio environment and live music venue.
This partnership enables us to connect our students to the music industry in a way that no other music production course does in the city. Ultimately, students are learning and developing valuable skills in a working studio and live music venue, and we believe teaching in this environment will inspire students to keep going and create the careers they wish to have.”

Like us, Bristol Beacon has long-term programmes that support young people and this consistency of approach, combined with a commitment to embed programmes within the community, is what we believe makes the greatest difference.”
Renishaw
Creating unique opportunities for Renishaw Employees
Renishaw is committed to being an exciting and engaging place to work and Bristol Beacon has supported this ambition through a range of employee engagement activities. One example includes the creation of the Renishaw company choir and included a team away day at the Bristol Beacon. The initiative showcased how music can bring people together, boost wellbeing and foster a stronger sense of community within the workplace.
A partnership shaped around shared ambitions
While the Renishaw Room stands as a physical symbol of the partnership, the relationship is rooted in a shared commitment to supporting future generations and skills development.
This aligns closely with Bristol Beacon’s approach to music education and skills development and both organisations recognise the importance of creating sustained opportunities that nurture growth over time, rather than relying on one-off interventions.
One example of this, is that in 2015 the organisations sought to inspire young people and broaden their opportunities to engage with music, science, technology, engineering and mathematics. They achieved this by implementing a one-year trial of Beat Lab. A programme which gave children, aged seven to fourteen, the opportunity to design and make musical instruments from fruit and vegetables – which was achieved using circuit boards and conductive ink to complete electric circuits. The main objective of this programme was to inspire children to take STEM subjects at GCSE and A-Levels to help reduce the skills shortage in engineering.
A bespoke and meaningful approach to partnerships
Over 12 years, the partnership has supported a range of initiatives that support Bristol Beacon, Renishaw and the local community.
For organisations considering a partnership with us, the Renishaw partnership highlights the breadth of our experience and programmes, alongside our willingness to develop initiatives that fit individual organisational aims.
The Renishaw partnership shows we work with clients to support shared priorities, develop meaningful initiatives and contribute to the cultural and educational life of their region.
Bristol Beacon will almost certainly be able to offer organisations the type of partnership that best fits their own aims.”
