A destination for collaboration: Bringing music into the community

A trombone player performs to a group of people of varying ages. Everyone is laughing.

We’re over 100 days into our reopening year and we still can’t get enough of that buzz. Excited audiences, musicians doing their thing and stages full of school children.

Our transformed performance spaces at Bristol Beacon offer us, as a music charity, the opportunity to explore and develop how our local community can benefit from a world-class venue. We bring together incredible musicians from around the globe and participants in our community projects. When they meet in the same space, what happens next is magical!

Music for everyone

Since reopening, Lantern Hall has played host to some fantastic CPD workshops for music teachers. Some of the sessions have brought musicians from the Royal Opera House, a dance themed workshop for schools featuring musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and last month, musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra joined us for a Springtime intergenerational workshop.

It was our first collaboration with LSO in Lantern Hall, with Bristol Beacon community musicians and orchestral players working as one.  Everyone sat in a circle, there were no edges, everyone was mixed in together. That was what made it unique for me.”

It was a warm, friendly and collaborative morning… I’m excited to start some thinking about what could be next.”

Springtime In Symphony

To welcome in the season and encourage some sunshine, we invited participants in our Community Arts and Health programmes, Pulse and Our Music Club to join people from across Bristol for a morning of music making with musicians from London Symphony Orchestra.

From little ones (the youngest aged 4 weeks) curious adults, teens and our more senior members of the community, the group were led on a collaborative spring time musical journey with the LSO and our Bristol-based regular music facilitators. Babies could gurgle, children could dance and singing along was highly encouraged.

We’ve shared before about the Power of Music and its positive impact on health and wellbeing in our city. With the LSO workshop, bringing world-class musicians to share with Bristolians of all ages, gave the opportunity for exploration, play and curiosity into potentially unexplored musical worlds

So what’s next? Keep your eyes peeled for more collaborative community events at Bristol Beacon and beyond, sharing world-class music with our city.
