The Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera present a colourful programme for their first visit to the UK. Orchestral favourites rub shoulders with music from Argentina’s greatest composer Astor Piazzolla, including a unique opportunity to hear his Concerto for Bandoneon – an Argentinian piano accordion.
Wagner’s Prelude & Liebestod from his most romantic opera, Tristan & Isolde, begins the programme, followed by Piazzolla’s concerto to end the first half.
Bizet’s dazzling orchestral suite from his great opera Carmen opens the second half, followed by a suite from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, the music of which has been tantalising audiences since it was composed in 1876. Next, a chance to hear music from another Argentinian composer, Ginastera – his Estancia Suite. The concert ends with a real treat and probably the most famous piece written by Argentina’s greatest composer Astor Piazzolla: his ever-popular Libertango.
