This practical session explores four essential elements of an Oak Music lesson: lesson structure, pedagogy, classroom practice and teaching resources.
Our Discover introductory sessions give teachers and leaders a clear understanding of the thinking behind the principles that underpin the Oak Primary Music Curriculum. They explore how sequencing and progression are embedded within lessons, across units, throughout each year group and across the programme as a whole. Using practical, classroom-ready examples, the sessions bring the curriculum to life, demonstrating how Oak’s lesson structures, teaching approaches and resources work together to support high-quality music teaching. Alongside this, you’ll gain practical guidance on classroom organisation, establishing routines and preparing pupils for successful musical learning from the very first lesson.
By the end of the session, you will have a secure understanding of Oak’s curriculum design, lesson structure and progression, together with the confidence to implement the curriculum successfully in your own setting, whatever your prior experience of teaching music.

The Oak National Academy Primary Music Curriculum is a free, high-quality programme designed to support inclusive, joyful and ambitious music education for all primary pupils.
Created in partnership by Bristol Beacon and Cathedral Schools Trust, the curriculum offers a clear, progressive pathway for teaching music from Years 1–6. It supports pupils to develop their musicianship through singing, listening, composing and performing, while nurturing creativity, wellbeing and a lifelong connection to music.
To create the total of 228 lesson content and resources, we partnered with national cultural organisations and acclaimed artists within the sector, drawing on their expertise and resources to produce a range of diverse and engaging content. Creative partners include Paraorchestra, National Children’s Orchestra, Royal Ballet and Opera, Jasdeep Singh Degun, Jason Singh, Nate Holder and more.
Free resources for everyone
As Oak Primary Music Curriculum is now used in over 18,000 schools across the country, our hope is that all Bristol primary schools will consider adopting the curriculum for their setting.

Location: Lantern Hall is located within Bristol Beacon. Head to Level 1 and follow signs to find the auditorium.

Bicycle racks can be found in front of the main entrance on Trenchard Street, Colston Street, and on the city centre promenade. Find your nearest cycle routes using Cycle Planner.

Trenchard Street multi-storey car park is 200m away, directly behind Bristol Beacon.
Bristol Clean Air Zone
Bristol Beacon is inside the Bristol Clean Air Zone. Check if your vehicle will be charged and how much you’ll have to pay.

Most bus services stop in and around the city centre promenade, 250m from Bristol Beacon.

Spaces for wheelchair users are available within the first 10 rows on the flat floor of the Hall.
Assistance Dogs
Assistance dogs and emotional support animals are allowed in the performance space. Seats in rows AA-J on the flat floor are most suitable. If you prefer, you can leave your animal with a member of staff during the performance.
Hearing Facility
A Sennheiser MobileConnect assistive listening system is installed in the venue. Download the free App and use your own mobile device and headphones to listen to the performance. (Devices are available on request.)
