ONLINE Oak Music Curriculum Training: Discover Session 1

Created by Bristol Beacon and Cathedral Schools Trust, the free Oak National Academy Primary Music Curriculum launched in 2025 to support inclusive and joyful music education for every primary pupil.

Now, the creators of the curriculum are offering online CPD courses to help teachers put it into practice. Designed with busy primary schools in mind, the sessions are practical and focus on real classroom experience.

This practical session explores four essential elements of an Oak Music lesson: lesson structure, pedagogy, classroom practice and teaching resources.

Building on your understanding of the curriculum’s design and intent, this session explores how Oak’s pedagogical principles translate into effective classroom practice.

Through practical examples and demonstrations, you’ll discover:

• How an Oak Primary Music lesson is structured, including how singing, ensemble playing, composition and improvisation are taught through carefully structured learning.

• How the Oak learning cycle is designed to support musical progress through retrieval, metacognition and purposeful repetition.

• How Oak develops pupils as musicians, building musical understanding alongside confidence, self-regulation and effective rehearsal strategies.

• How singing skills are developed through lessons designed to support both specialist and non-specialist teachers.

• How to make the most of Oak’s teaching resources, including when and how to use the classroom and teacher videos effectively.

• How Oak lessons identify and address common musical misconceptions.
